Polish Dark Chocolate Cake

  • I have seen several references to a dark chocolate cake called murzynek – ‘little African boy’.
  • I have looked at several recipes and tried some of them out.
  • I was not happy with the results – either too dry or not dark enough.
  • I then came across this recipe, which I was pleased with.
  • It is a dense cake – not like a tort.
  • This recipe was most unusual in that all the ingredients were whisked together including the flour!
  • Oil & yoghurt are used in this cake (NO BUTTER).
  • Cocoa powder is used and dark fruit jam!

INGREDIENTS

  • 450g plain flour
  • 3 tablespoons of cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 165g granulated sugar
  • 150 ml Greek style yoghurt
  • 100 ml cold water
  • 240g of a good  dark jam/conserve – blackcurrant was used here.
  • 3 eggs
  • 12ml of sunflower oil

METHOD

  • Pre-heat the oven to GM4 – 180°C.
  • Grease and line(3 sides with 1 piece of greaseproof) a 26 x 20cm baking tin.
  • In one bowl, mix the dry ingredients : flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa and sugar together.
  • Mix together the water and the yoghurt.
  • In another bowl whisk together the eggs, yoghurt mix, jam and oil.
  • Slowly add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisk them all together until well mixed in.
  • Pour the batter into the baking and smooth over the top.
  • Bake for 45 – 50 minutes.
  • *
  • Can dust with icing sugar when serving.
  • Keeps very well in an airtight plastic box.

OPTIONS

  • Sprinkle top with flaked almonds or chopped hazel nuts.
  • Next time I am going to look at the ingredients needed for a 2egg

I love cooking and baking. I love trying out new recipes and currently am trying out many old favourites from my Polish cookbooks and family recipes. I am trying out many variations, often to make them easier but still delicious. I collect glass cake stands and china tableware, mainly tea plates, jugs and serving dishes, many of which I use on a daily basis. They are an eclectic mixture from the 20th & 21st century.

  1. This looks very interesting – I’m always looking for a good chocolate cake recipe and I too would be interested in a 2 egg recipe as this one would probably be too much for two people. Dziekuje bardzo! Iwona x

  2. Hello Jadwigo 🙂
    Dzień dobry Jadziu 🙂
I am not sure if links are allowed here, but I will try:

or find ‘Menu Dorotki’ YT channel and then search ‘Murzynek’.
This is an old-fashioned, retro recipe and a bit forgotten, when here, in Poland, almost nothing sweet was to buy.
The author, Dorotka, always prepares her recipies very precisely and well-thought-out, from A to Z, for all, even for not experienced in cooking and explains a lot of about importatnt steps or actions or products. She is a perfectinist 🙂 !
You may also find clear, updated playlists. I especially recommend you just excellent way to make pierogi pastry, quick and clean, no kitchen covered with flour 😉
I recommend you her channel with all my heart and I hope you find there many interesting recipies 🙂
Unfortunately, she seldom anwers for comments 😦

And, btw, I would like to have your e-mail address, if you are so kind ( or reply to my e-mail that you see, I think ), because I see some words, few, to correct in your last fish list and I would like to be polite and not write my suggestions such open way in comments :). They are not significant, but I am a pedant, too 😉

    Have a nice evening 🙂

I will look for the links you recommended.
I have just got a new recipe for pierogi dough which I will be posting soon.
I bet the fish errors might be some of the accents – always a bit difficult to add – or some spellings – proof reading is hard especially as wordpress does not have a Polish spell checker – or if it does I have not found it.
Glad to have any errors corrected – I want everything to be just right.
